I stand facing the endless sea. It is a time of comfort for me. The sea that quietly guards its place is calm and still, so it seems like it listens to me even without missing a single word. If we stand before OH Byung Wook’s works, it seems like we are in front of the ‘sea’. The sea he shows us is ideal and romantic, from the three-dimensional texture of its waves to the infinite space. Although it does not exist in the real world, the vast expanse of the seascape always embraces us calmly. His sea approaches in a new form. OH’s sea that hugged us waving in silence presents various colors now. The sea, dressed in the bold color of the sky, does not speak anything, but its appearance implies audacity. The sea expressed in this way seems to be trying to change, and it is still pure and warm as well. No matter what hardship comes, you will be able to overcome it in a breeze if you keep your eyes on the sea. From now on, we will be able to look at the sea within us again with a detached attitude and a hopeful gaze.

Biography

Oh Byungwook graduated from the Painting Department of Seoul National University and took a Master’s degree in art theory at the graduate school of the same university. He is an artist who has devoted much time to describing nature, especially the sea. The relationship between he and nature is ambiguous yet clear. He makes landscape paintings but does not represent real landscapes. It would be more proper to say that like artists of Korean traditional landscape paintings, he does not portray the sceneries he sees, but the landscapes of his heart and mind. So his pieces give off a very transcendent and dreamy feeling. The rippling surface of the sea is calm, yet it is unknown where it is headed. The expressed intense three-dimensional waves are concentrative and reminds us of reverent religious ceremonies. His major exhibitions includes BLUE HOUR (Artside Gallery, Seoul, 2022), Holiday for Me (Artside Gallery, Seoul, 2021), Seas and Islands of Korea (Korean Cultural Center, Italy, 2019), Two Worlds (Kimsechoong Museum, Seoul, 2018), Engagement (Chang Ucchin Museum of Art, Yangju City, 2017), A solo exhibition (Ilwoo Space, Seoul, 2016), Zeitgeist (The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, 2013). The main collection of his artwork is The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
