Artside Gallery holds an exhibition titled “Boundary“ from November 12 to December 11, 2021. The exhibition aims to look into the present age that uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic has encroached on.
Recently we see ‘fear’ triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic spread throughout the present era that was built on faith in reason and logic. Has there been an era when people experienced such a somatized fear? The fear that we feel through the memory of our collective experience gives cracks to our existing firm system. So we each now find ‘I’ (the subject of our life) accessing the outside world intuitively and empirically as a reaction to the amplified doubts and spread of speculations provoked by the Covid-19 pandemic. Looking into the depth of today’s unpredictable uncertainty, the participating artists in the exhibition show societies and individuals that are newly categorized by the world surrounding us.
The three artists of the exhibition present new perspectives of self-awareness through the relationships between ‘the world and humans’ that they interpret in consideration of the current situation where the world is being cracked. KIM Chansong describes the human body, which was perceived as a perfect independent entity, as an unfamiliar entity. Through the human body (a medium of an accident that senses and is sensed at the same time), she catches a liminal scene where developmental cracks are formed. LEE Jaeseok looks into the relationships between a huge system and an individual in it, portraying life and death, the human body and an object, and an individual and a society in the category of his work. As the COVID-19 pandemic has been lasting long, making people isolated from each other, LEE explores relationships through beings onto whom he projects his personal story and who stand on the boundaries of the world. His work offers many implications to viewers. JEONG Jaebeom creates works that offer various perspectives and topics of issues that we face in daily life. Paying attention to the lack of communication caused by the unprecedented global pandemic of Covid-19, he presents in visual forms interactions that we can experience only through physical contacts. He contemplates on the nature of relationships.
The exhibition demonstrates uncertain aspects of the world that have been brought about the Covid-19 pandemic through the works of art by artists who have brooded over humans standing on the boundaries of the world, being detached from each other socially and physically. We hope that the exhibition will be a chance for viewers to look back on individuals as the subjects of the world that they have been indifferent to so far.
