조은(b.1986)은 한국화를 기반으로 자신이 동경하는 자연, 그리고 자연을 닮아 본능적이고도 다채로운 일상을 보내며 교감하는 현대인들의 일상을 묘사한다. 그는 자연이 만들어 낸 비정형적인 묵직한 리듬감을 먹의 스며듦과 번짐, 농담을 통해 자유자재로 활용하는 동시에 아크릴이나 과슈 등의 서양화 재료를 활용하여 독창적인 화면을 구성한다. 만물의 색상이 담겨있다는 중후한 먹의 흐름 사이사이를 채우는 서양화 재료들은 화면에 활기를 더하며 익숙한 이미지를 연상시킨다. 이와 같은 방식으로 조은은 관념적 전통 산수화에 자신의 경험, 주관적 해석을 결합해내는 방식으로 한국화를 현대적인 동시에 개인적인 것으로 변형해낸다. 최근 작가는 ‘흐르다’라는 단어에 관심을 가지며 작업하고 있다. 먹을 머금은 붓 끝이 만나 우연히 퍼져나가는 ‘흐름’이 자연스럽게 천에 스며들어 완성된 장면 속에서, 평온하고 무해한 관계의 아름다움을 찾고, 그로 인해 ‘연결’되는 순간들을 화면에 펼쳐 내고 있다. 조은은 전남대학교 미술학과에서 한국화를, 홍익대학교 동양화 석사를 졸업했다. 주요 개인전으로 《木木木 : 흐를 숲》(아트사이드 갤러리, 서울, 2024), 《Beads in the Green》(아트사이드 갤러리, 서울, 2022)이 있고, 주요 소장처는 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 현대어린이책미술관이 있다.
Jo Eun (b. 1986) creates works based on traditional Korean painting, depicting the daily lives of modern people who connect with nature while living instinctively and diversely. She focuses on nature, which she admires, and expresses it through the fluid, organic rhythms that nature creates. She skillfully incorporates the spreading and blending of ink, along with varying tones, to create dynamic compositions. Simultaneously, Jo uses Western painting materials such as acrylics and gouache, adding depth and vibrancy to the artwork while evoking familiar images. The Western materials, filling the spaces between the weighty flow of ink, energize the piece and bring to mind images that resonate with the viewer. Through this method, Jo combines her personal experiences and subjective interpretations with traditional conceptual landscape painting, transforming Korean painting into something modern and personal. Recently, the artist has been focusing on the concept of "flow." The brush, saturated with ink, spreads out naturally when it touches the canvas, completing the scene with its organic flow. In this process, Jo seeks the beauty of peaceful and harmless relationships, revealing moments of connection on the canvas. Jo Eun studied Korean painting at Chonnam National University and earned a Master's degree in Oriental Painting from Hongik University. Her major solo exhibitions include "木木木 : The Flowing Forest" (Art Side Gallery, Seoul, 2024) and "Beads in the Green" (Art Side Gallery, Seoul, 2022). Her works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Hyundai Children's Book Art Museum.
